Installation

BaseLayer is a native macOS app. It manages your local knowledge vault, runs the dream engine, and hosts the MCP server your AI tools connect to.

System requirements

  • macOS 13 (Ventura) or later
  • Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) or Intel

Download

Download BaseLayer for macOS → The download page will detect your chip automatically. If you need a specific version:
  • Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4): BaseLayer-arm64.dmg
  • Intel: BaseLayer-x64.dmg

Install

  1. Open the downloaded .dmg file
  2. Drag BaseLayer into your Applications folder
  3. Open BaseLayer from Applications
On first launch, macOS Gatekeeper may block the app. If you see “BaseLayer can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software,” go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click Open Anyway.

Verify it’s running

Once launched, you’ll see the BaseLayer icon in your menu bar (top-right of your screen). Click it to open the app window. The menu bar icon indicates status:
  • Active: BaseLayer is running and capturing
  • Paused: Capture is paused (click to resume)

Auto-launch on startup

BaseLayer is configured to start automatically when you log in. You can change this in Settings → General → Launch at login.

Updates

BaseLayer checks for updates automatically. When a new version is available, you’ll see a notification in the app. Updates are downloaded and installed with one click.

Uninstall

To remove BaseLayer:
  1. Quit the app (menu bar icon → Quit)
  2. Move BaseLayer from Applications to Trash
  3. Your vault data remains in ~/Library/Application Support/BaseLayer/. Delete this folder to remove all data
Your encrypted vault is stored locally. Uninstalling the app does not delete your data unless you explicitly remove the data folder.
