FAQ

Is my data sent to BaseLayer servers?

Only encrypted blobs for multi-device sync. All encryption happens on your device before transmission. We can’t decrypt your data. See Privacy & Security for details.

Can I use BaseLayer offline?

Yes. Your vault is stored locally and all search operations run on your machine. You can use BaseLayer tools via local MCP (Claude Code, Gemini CLI) without an internet connection. Internet is only needed for remote MCP connections (Claude.ai, ChatGPT) and multi-device sync.

How do I delete my data?

Delete your vault: In the desktop app, go to Settings → Vault → Delete Vault. This permanently removes all local data. Sign out only: Signing out preserves your encrypted vault on disk. You can sign back in and resume using it. Delete your account: Contact support@baselayer.id to request full account deletion.

Does BaseLayer work on Windows or Linux?

Currently, BaseLayer is macOS only. Windows and Linux support is on the roadmap.

How much storage does BaseLayer use?

It depends on how many conversations you have. A typical vault with several months of conversations uses 50–200 MB. The vault is stored in ~/Library/Application Support/BaseLayer/.

Can multiple people share a vault?

No. BaseLayer vaults are personal, encrypted with your individual passphrase. Each person needs their own account and vault.

Does BaseLayer read my conversations in real time?

The Chrome extension and IDE watchers detect conversations as they happen, but processing isn’t instant. Conversations are queued and processed by the dream engine in the background, typically within a few minutes.

What happens if I change my passphrase?

You can change your passphrase in Settings → Security. Your vault is re-encrypted with the new passphrase. This is a local operation. BaseLayer servers are not involved.

Is BaseLayer open source?

The MCP tools specification is open. The desktop app and dream engine are not currently open source.
